Exciting to see the progress in the SSDP – the barrel roof over the Wathen Hall and new classroom complex has been seeded and the Old Library & Pit areas are barely recognisable as the remodelling begins… not long to go now before completion!

CADOGAN HALL GALA CONCERT
20/03/2024
Music filled The Cadogan Hall with joy as nearly 300 boys from Years 2 to 8 took the stage for our annual Gala Concert. The event was a celebration of musical diversity, featuring a range of instrumental ensembles and choirs.

Students entertained the audience with a wide variety of musical genres. From the classical elegance of Schubert’s Trout Quintet to the energetic beats of Fat Boy Slim’s “Right Here Right Now,” each performance was met with enthusiastic applause. Congratulations to all, especially the Music Department, on another truly memorable Cadogan Hall Gala Concert.
TWO MORE RETIREMENTS
05/02/2024
With a combination of happiness for them and sadness for the school, we announce the retirement of two longstanding members of staff whom many of you will remember with fondness. If you would like to contribute to retirement collections being managed by the HSPA, please click on the relevant links below:-

Mel Casey

Mel has been Catering Manager at The Hall for an impressive 30 years and will retire at the end of the spring term 2024. Over the years Mel has been instrumental in introducing new foods to boys and coaxed and encouraged picky eaters to try new tastes and flavours. She has maintained old favourites such as mac 'n' cheese and fish fingers, and her carrot cake and banoffee pie are 'to die for'! Mel encourages healthy eating for students and staff alike and the new-ish salad bar would do Ottolenghi proud.

Mel's retirement includes a move to Suffolk, where she is already planning cookery lessons for locals and a part-time job in a local coffee shop/patisserie. Even though she is retiring from The Hall, Mel has no plans to slow down any time soon!

Tim Telfer

After 26 years, Mr Tim Telfer former Head of DT and current Senior School Liaison, is to retire from The Hall at the end of the summer term 2024. As Head of DT, Mr Telfer instilled a love and appreciation of design, encouraging students to learn practical skills needed in life outside the classroom. In latter years Mr Telfer has played a key role in securing places for Hall School students in an increasingly competitive and stressful race for places at some of the most academically demanding schools in London and the wider world.

In retirement, Mr Telfer looks forward to spending time in his garden, making travel plans and more time to study his first love - architecture.

Progress Update on the SSDP
15/12/2023
This Autumn term has seen amazing activity in terms of the part-demolition, reconstruction and new build of the Wathen Hall, as we progress steadily through the milestones of the development project of the Senior School.

The messy demolition work was completed during the school's summer holidays, leaving a 'shell' for reinforcement and the erecting of new floors, walls and ceilings for three new classrooms and an extended Science lab on top of the old sports hall. The building work has been exciting to watch; at times Crossfield Road has had to be partially closed to enable the bringing in of a massive crane and the delivery of huge steel girders, lifted over the Centenary Building into place supporting the new roof. A feat of engineering which had the MS pupils enthralled (and late for lessons!) for days.

The refurbishment of the SS classrooms and Art & Pottery studios, Science labs and Computer & DT suites has taken place steadily in the background as lessons and activities have continued in school... we look froward to seeing the continued progress into the New Year and 2024.

Senior School Development Project
18/07/2023
GREAT NEWS - WORK HAS STARTED

The Senior School Development has now started following the end of the summer term. Last minute cost and supply issues meant that it was only during the last week of June that it was possible to give the final ‘go ahead’ to the project; LifeBuild have been appointed as contractors and are now on site as of 10th July.

A range of refurbishment work will take place over the summer along with the first stage of the construction of the new classroom block on top of the Wathen Hall. All demolition work will be completed during August and by the start of the autumn term we will confirm the phasing plans for the remainder of the refurbishment and the completion of the new classroom block due by April 2024. The phasing plans will also take into account periods of time when work will not be taking place in school as result of assessments or other school events.

We look forward to you seeing the progress made so far at our alumni events next term.

More details can be found in the attached brochure.
The Right to Write
06/06/2023
We were delighted that students from Years 4-8 brought plans for a ‘proper’ academic journal to life this Spring, inspired by an idea from Mr Pinkus to give students the chance to have their work published. The Right to Write is a literary magazine in which to showcase their creativity, through poems, articles and stories. The inaugural copy went live on the school website in January; http://hallschool.co.uk/english-journal/ Editor James Hassan writes;

" The first step was to assemble a team of editors and so the Years 7 and 8 librarians were called together by Dr Luckhurst and the hard work began in discussing how the magazine should be run, what it should include and what the title should be. Many people signed up to be editors and attend the weekly Tuesday meetings at morning break. Our first decision to be made was the magazine’s title. Many names were put forward. I put forward the suggestion of ‘The Right to Write’ and was very excited when, after a vote, this title was selected! We then sent out information about the magazine requesting submissions. The magazine was open to all boys in the Middle and Senior schools. We had no idea how large the response would be but were very pleasantly surprised by the huge flood of responses – especially from Year 4! At the end of January, author Phil Earle came to give a 'writing' workshop for contributors too which was fun".
Hall Old Boys in Eton v Harrow at Lord's 2023
06/06/2023
Since 1805 the annual match between Eton & Harrow has taken place at Lord's. This year, on Friday 12th May, The Hall was proud to see two former students involved in the Eton team, Aryaman Varma & Joe Beagles. Joe was delighted to accept the honour of captaining the team in this showcase fixture.

Having won the toss, Joe decided to bowl but after some early wicket and just 40 minutes of play there was a lengthy rain delay. Thankfully, after an early lunch, some brighter weather then set the scene for a dramatic afternoon's cricket. As Harrow rebuilt after a shaky start, Aryaman bowled a tidy 11 over spell straight through in the 55 over innings for just 48 runs and Joe came into the attack late on with 3 overs for 20 runs as Harrow posted a challenging total of 275-6 from their overs.

Due to the rain break Eton were then set a revised total of 202 from 30 overs which seemed like a steep challenge from the start. However, some big hitting from the top order as the overs ran out, including 7 sixes, set the stage for a dramatic final over. 11 runs to win was what was needed and Eton had 8 wickets in hand. The first ball brought about the third wicket and Joe Beagles came to the crease - 5 balls and 11 runs to get. Unfortunately, things did not run Eton's way in the final over and they finished on 197-5. Defeat by just 4 runs Joe was left at the crease on 2*.

A dramatic end to a wonderful day at the Home of Cricket.

A day that Joe and Aryaman will remember for a long time.
MATHS THROUGH STORIES (a story about a Hall student winning a Maths Story competition)
06/06/2023
The learning and teaching of maths at the school has well and truly come into the 21st century! Teachers in the Maths Dept. encouraged Hall students to enter a competition run by
MathsThroughStories.org, an international research-based initiative, which sets out to explore various aspects of integrating stories and literacy in mathematics instruction and to make mathematics teaching accessible and enjoyable for learners everywhere through the power of story-telling and children's imagination.

With 455 entries from 53 schools and homeschooling sites across 12 countries to judge, the Stuart J. Murphy Award (the 8-11 years old category) was very competitive this year, but we are delighted to hear that the entry from Rayaan Jan in 5P, a story called "Wagyu Dreams," submitted to the Young Mathematical Story Authors competition, has been longlisted. You can read this budding mathematician's story for yourself at: tthehall_rayaanjan_10_male.pdf (mathsthroughstories.org). Congratulations Rayaan!
